Spire Conducting Advanced Leak Detection

From Aug. 19–25 (in the shaded area shown above), Spire will be in the Crestwood area using an advanced leak detection method to identify potential natural gas emissions. ABB, a company specializing in natural gas monitoring, will conduct the fieldwork in the Missouri East region on Spire’s behalf.

The testing uses a specially equipped vehicle with an anemometer sensor mounted on top—similar in appearance to mapping vehicles—to precisely detect and locate potential emissions.

Know What to Do if You Smell Gas

Natural gas is colorless and odorless, so companies like Spire add mercaptan, which has a distinct rotten egg scent, to help identify leaks. If you ever smell natural gas:

  • Leave immediately: Go to a location where the smell is no longer detectable.
  • Avoid anything that could cause a spark: Do not smoke, use electronics (such as garage door openers or alarm systems), or turn lights on or off until you are at a safe distance.
  • Call for help: From a safe location, contact Spire’s 24/7 emergency line at 800-887-4173 or call 911.
  • Notify property management: If you don’t own the property, alert the owner or manager in case repairs are needed. Stay clear: Do not return until a gas safety professional (Spire employee, police officer, firefighter, or other first responder) confirms the area is safe.
